ALPINE DESIGN AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Design Alpino is committed to promoting corporate sustainability and reducing environmental impact throughout its work cycle. Furthermore, operating mainly in mountainous areas, the sensitivity of Design Alpino regarding these issues is even higher. Design Alpino wants to involve its customers in this important commitment, providing detailed information and precise answers on the CO2 emissions generated during the production of packaging, on transport and on the products offered.
Packaging recycling
One of the first questions we asked ourselves to start the virtuous process of reducing CO2 emissions was where to start containing them. And the resulting response was on the packaging. So we found out how much CO2 is generated to make an average cardboard that we use for shipping, considering a thickness of 3mm and a surface of approximately 1,5 square meters.
We must underline that the amount of CO2 generated for the production of a carton depends on various factors, such as the source of raw materials, the efficiency of the production plant, transportation and other elements that may vary depending on the specific situation. However, based on industry average data, we can provide a rough estimate.
According to research conducted by Carbon Trust,, carbon emissions consultancy, the production of 1 ton of recycled cardboard emits approximately 360 kg of CO2 equivalent. While this value varies based on the composition of the cardboard and the amount of recycling used, we can use this figure as a rough estimate.
Assuming that 3 mm thick cardboard with a surface area of 1,5 m300 has a density of approximately 450 g/m0,45, its mass would be approximately 2 g (0,16 kg). Therefore, the amount of CO2 equivalent emitted for the production of this carton would be approximately 360 kg of CO0,00045 equivalent [(0,16 kg/tonne) x XNUMX tonnes = XNUMX kg].
That's why in Design Alpino we have decided, where possible, to reuse the packaging we receive from our suppliers to deliver the products to our customers.
Logistics
Secondo theEuropean Environment Agency, light commercial vehicles, including vans, account for 4% of total CO2 emissions from the transport sector in the EU. Furthermore, road transport in Europe is responsible for 22% of the continent's total greenhouse gas emissions, making the transport sector a major contributor to climate change.
When it comes to emissions from an individual van, the data depends on the specific model, the load carried, driving conditions and other factors. However, some studies indicate that the average van can emit up to 200 grams of CO2 per kilometer. If we consider that a van travels an average of 30.000 to 50.000 kilometers per year, it means that it can emit up to 10 tonnes of CO2 in a single year.
It is therefore important that both companies operating in the logistics and distribution sector and those that benefit from them adopt ecological and sustainable policies, such as the use of hybrid or electric vehicles on the courier side, and the grouping of shipments and the reduction of empty trips on the customer side.
Design Alpino is committed to doing its part, and has therefore implemented an eco-friendly shipping system that reduces the burden on the company by organizing multiple shipments.
Design Alpino is aware of its social and environmental responsibility and will continue to seek innovative solutions to further reduce the environmental impact of its business.
